Combined specular and off-specular reflectometry: elucidating the complex structure of soft buried interfaces

چکیده

Neutron specular reflectometry (SR) and off-specular scattering (OSS) are nondestructive techniques which, through deuteration, give a high contrast even among chemically identical species therefore highly suitable for investigations of soft-matter thin films. Through combination these two techniques, the former yielding density profile in direction normal to sample surface latter depth-resolved in-plane lateral structure, one can obtain quite detailed information on buried morphology length scales ranging from order ångströms ?10 µm. This is illustrated via quantitative evaluation data SR OSS collected time-of-flight (ToF) measurements set films composed immiscible polymer layers, protonated poly(methyl methacrylate) deuterated polystyrene, undergoing decomposition process upon annealing. Joint analysis was performed by use quick robust originally developed algorithm including common absolute-scale normalization both types scattering, which intricately linked, constraining model degree. This, particularly, makes it possible distinguish readily between different dewetting scenarios driven either nucleation growth defects (holes, protrusions etc. ) or thermal fluctuations interface layers. Finally, 2D maps particular cases presented spaces qualitative differences explained, allowing also differentiation structure long-range order, correlated roughness bulk simple inspection prior fits.

Measurement of molecular mixing at a conjugated polymer interface by specular and off-specular neutron scattering.

Measurements have been performed on thermally equilibrated conjugated-polymer/insulating-polymer bilayers, using specular and off-specular neutron reflectivity. While specular reflectivity is only sensitive to the structure normal to the sample, off-specular measurements can probe the structure of the buried polymer/polymer interface in the plane of the sample. Systematic analysis of the scatte...

Unique specular shape from two specular flows

When a curved mirror-like surface moves relative to its environment, it induces a motion field—or specular flow—on the image plane that observes it. This specular flow is related to the mirror’s shape through a non-linear partial differential equation, and there is interest in understanding when and how this equation can be solved for surface shape. Existing analyses of this ‘shape from specula...

Specular neutron reflectivity and the structure of artificial protein maquettes vectorially oriented at interfaces.

Artificial peptides can be designed to possess a variety of functionalities. If these peptides can be ordered in an ensemble, the functionality can impart macroscopic material properties to the ensemble. Neutron reflectivity is shown to be an effective probe of the intramolecular structures of such peptides vectorially oriented at an interface, key to ensuring that the designed molecular struct...

Color Constancy with Specular and Non-Specular Surfaces

There is a growing trend in machine color constancy research to use only image chromaticity information, ignoring the magnitude of the image pixels. This is natural because the main purpose is often to estimate only the chromaticity of the illuminant. However, the magnitudes of the image pixels also carry information about the chromaticity of the illuminant. One such source of information is th...

Specular Stereo

A glossy highlight, viewed stereoscopically, can provide information about surface shape. For example, highlights appear to lie behind convex surfaces but in front of concave ones. A highlight is a distorted, reflected image of a light source. A ray equation is developed to predict the stereo disparities generated when a point source of light is reflected in a smooth, curved surface. This equat...
